Yvonne Farrell & Shelley Mcnamara are an Irish duo of architects that was awarded the Pritzker Prize in 2020 for their outstanding architecture and generosity to their community. Their buildings can be characterized as monumental structures inspired by modern and brutalist styles of architecture.
Design Philosophy: To create architecture that revolves around human-centric design. To create open spaces within their buildings where people can interact and form relationships. Farrell and Mcnamara are focused on bringing out the idea of community and citizenship within their architecture.
Design Idea: Unexpected Encounters
The approach I went for in my designs was inspired by an experience of a professor from Toulousse University who described his interaction with a stranger on the staircase. This campus that the duo designed implemented spaces like corridors and narrow staircases to unexpected encounters with strangers.
Goal: Explore the idea of unexpected encounters through connection and separation.

Book (Connection)
Book : 9 in. x 6 in
Internal Flaps: 18 in. x 12 in.
French-fold books. Both spreads and inside flaps are utilized for text. Text is separated into commentary and descriptions and occasionally switches between the spread and flap.
Highlight the idea of connection by scaling connector words throughout the text.
